Recreation is a way of life in Contra Costa County. Each neighborhood has it's own special charms and unique personality. Browse through the list of communities (click on city name) to find the one that is just right for you. Pleasant Hill Pleasant Hill, tucked between Walnut Creek, Martinez and Lafayette, offers older homes, primarily in housing tracts and a community college. Shopping is convenient, with facilities located in adjacent Concord and Walnut Creek. The area tends to be wooded and well landscaped. Prices tend to be good for single-family resales, moderate for condominiums and fairly expensive for new home projects close to an 18-hole golf course in the hills. Pleasant Hill Information Links ----top---- Lafayette Near Orinda, Lafayette is a larger, semi-rual incorporated city with a full range of shopping and services. There is some new housing, however, the community is primarily composed of mature homes in established neighborhoods. The varied terrain includes hillside view lots. Lafayette Information Links ----top---- Moraga Moraga is a rual community located south of Oridna and Lafayette, offering a blend of fine residential areas and pastures where cattle and horses graze. Shopping is limited but adequate. Homes are on larger pieces of property, many with stables for horses. There are condominiums and single family homes in the expensive price range. St. Mary's College is located there. Moraga Information Links ----top---- Orinda The bedroom community to San Francisco in Contra Costa County is located on Highway 24, just over the hills from Berkeley. Orinda is comprised of older, established homes in the expensive price range. The terrain is hilly and most home sites are large, often 1/2 acre and up, with predominantly custom ranch-style homes. Available homes are almost exclusively resales, although there is some new custom construction. Many homes are built on hillside lots with magnificent views. Orinda Information Links ----top---- Martinez The natural harbor has made Martinez the choice location for oil refineries. The city has enjoyed orderly growth, with new housing developments in the southern end that range from moderate to higher prices. A haven for antique lovers, Martinez offers many interesting shops for browsing in the downtown area. It is the oldest community and the County seat. Martinez Information Links ----top---- Walnut Creek Walnut Creek is a suburban community in the truest sense, with a full range of community services and an extensive shopping center downtown. The community is primarily composed of older housing developments, many of which include swim clubs. There is an ample supply of both condominiums and apartments. Prices fro housing units tend to be in the moderate to high range. There are some hills and view sites, but the area is much flatter that Orinda or Lafayette. Walnut Creek Information Links ----top---- Clayton Clayton is a small semi-rural community with great views of Mt. Diablo. It consists mostly of new homes in developments with small lots in the medium to higher rice ranges. Large areas are still undeveloped, giving the area a country feeling. Since there is limited local shopping, most residents use the facilities in Concord or Walnut Creek. Clayton Information Links ----top---- Concord Concord, a diversified community with a mix of industry, commercial establishments and residential areas, offers extensive shopping downtown and throughout the community. The residential areas consist of housing tracts of level lots with fenced yards and several apartment and condominium complexes. A good selection of resale and new homes are available here in the moderate price ranges. Since Concord is the largest community in Contra Costa County, almost every type of service facility is available in this city. Concord Information Links ----top---- Alamo The Alamo area has a rural flavor and appeals to people who desire a country setting. Famous for its warm sunny days throughout most of the year. Housing ranges from some modest homes convenient to the freeway and downtown, to exclusive and private estates nestled in the foothills adjacent to the private Round Hill Golf and Country Club. The many schools provide neighborhood playgrounds and playing fields. Alamo is a pleasant and prestigious town that wants to stay small. Alamo Information Links ----top---- San Ramon San Ramon is located in the heart of the San Ramon Valley, about 20 miles east of Oakland. It developed area for commuters from the city who prefer suburban living. Prices are in the moderate to higher ranges. Bishop Ranch, the business park area, is anchored by Chevron and Pacific Bell. Hacienda Park and Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton are also in close proximity to the city. The Market Place is an inviting shopping center, offering a variety of shops and services. Golf lovers can enjoy the public golf courses at San Ramon Royal Vista Golf & Canyon Lakes. San Ramon Information Links ----top---- Danville The Danville area has grown rapidly in the past few years and is now dominated by new homes and yet to be completed developments with swimming pools and tennis courts. Downtown Danville is quaint, with its old western motif and offers a full range of shopping facilities. Some older homes and estates are available, but most homes are in the recently constructed housing tracts and are expensively priced. Members of Crow Canyon Country Club enjoy the golf, swimming and tennis facilities there. Danville Information Links ----top---- Antioch The oldest city in Contra Costa County. It's over 115 years old (ancient by California standards), Antioch is very much a new city, with recently built marina and shopping facilities. Homes in the "affordable" price range are going up by the thousands, especially in the southeast section.
